The most used material in the construction of moulds is steel, given its characteristics of mechanical resistance, resistance to wear and thermal characteristics, associated to an appropriate price.

We can initially consider 3 types of steel:
- Carbon steel, usually in secondary parts of the mould base.
- Pretreated alloy steel, for mould base and moulding inserts.
- Alloy steel capable of being hardened.
